In Texas, senior citizens who reside in nursing homes have the right to feel safe, protected and to receive the medical treatment that they require. As the child or loved one of an elder, your priority is his or her safety.

Nursing home abuse can happen anywhere. Fortunately, there are routes that you can take to enforce the safety of your loved ones.

What is nursing home abuse?

Nursing home abuse can be physical or psychological. Medical care providers may neglect patients or forcibly sedate patients. Next Avenue explains signs that your loved one may be suffering abuse or neglect at the hands of care providers include:

  • Poor hygiene
  • Malnutrition
  • Bruises and abrasions
  • Sudden changes in behavior

If you suspect nursing home abuse, you can report it.

How can you report abuse?

Texas Health and Human Services have a hotline for families and loved ones to report any elder abuse. According to HHS, if you wish to file a report, you can remain anonymous. Likewise, you can keep the identity of your loved one anonymous. The only reason that the HHS would release your name is if legally compelled to. Keep in mind that you will not receive updates on your case if you remain anonymous.

To investigate reports, HHS Regulatory Services staff will make onsite appearances at the care facility. They will make observations and record any reviews. They may also conduct interviews with different people in the facility. First, there will be interviews with those who complained, then with residents and caregivers. Once they complete the investigation, they inform the family of the results.
